India floods

October 2009

Christian Aid has sent an initial £100,000 to help partners respond to the devastating floods which have struck the southern India states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnatka and affected 12.5 million people.

Torrential rains, the heaviest for more than a century, have devastated southern India. Hundreds of thousands of people are struggling to survive and while some relief is getting through, there is still an immediate need for help with people urgently requiring access to clean water, food and temporary shelter.

Christian Aid’s response

Christian Aid partners are providing:

• food – rice, lentils, cooking oil, salt and spices, as well as high protein biscuits for children
• clean water and basic sanitation facilities
• temporary shelter
• clothes, mats and family hygiene kits
• cooking utensils

One partner, the Church’s Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA), is running a food programme and hopes to reach 12,000 people through a network of local churches and community organisations.

During times of emergencies, it’s the poor who are the worst affected. Christian Aid has received reports of dalit communities (formerly known as ‘untouchables’) being excluded from the relief effort and our partners are working to ensure they have access to the help they desperately need.
