Sri Lanka crisis appeal

September 2009

Christian Aid urgently needs your support to respond to the post-conflict humanitarian crisis in northeast Sri Lanka.

Nearly 250,000 people are living in overcrowded transit camps where conditions are cramped and facilities stretched.

On average, 12 people are living in tents meant to house four people. This overcrowding, along with the pending monsoon rains, means that there is now a serious risk of outbreaks of diseases such as cholera, typhoid and dysentery.

In addition, these transit camps are not set up to withstand monsoon rains and so it is all the more important that those displaced by the conflict are able to return home as soon as before the rainy season begins.

Christian Aid partners respond

Christian Aid partner organisations are responding to the humanitarian needs in several transit camps but they urgently need your support to help them scale up their efforts and prepare people for early resettlement.

Our partners’ priority is to provide access to water, sanitation, food and non-food items such as clothing, shelter, toiletries and medical help to those most in need.

Christian Aid partner Organisation for Eelam Refugees Rehabilitation (OfERR) is working in six camps in Vavuniya, Mannar and Trincomalee  Over the coming months, OfERR will support families on their return by equipping kitchens and constructing toilets, tube wells and bathing enclosures.

In Jaffna town, our partners Social Organisation Network for Development (SOND) and the Refugee Rehabilitation Organisation (TRRO) are carrying out relief work with displaced families including the provision of nutritious food for infants.

Support our appeal

Our partners are supporting people still displaced by the conflict. With your donation they can help many more people. So please give what you can.

• £55 could provide a family returning home with basic household items including blankets, mosquito nets and floor mats.

• £75 could provide a family with kitchen utensils such as pots, pans and a small cooker so they can set up home again.

• £125 could pay for nutritious, cooked meals for ten families for a week.
