Once regarded as the bread basket of southern Africa, a staggering seven million Zimbabweans, almost half the country's population, were in need of food aid this year.

With essential services in disarray, Zimbabwe was ill-prepared to deal with the cholera epidemic which at its peak saw around 3,800 new infections each week.
