We are stepping up our response to the cholera crisis

Latest figures from the World Health Organisation suggest that the death toll in Zimbabwe’s cholera now stands at more than 3,000. While the number of reported cases countrywide has risen to at least 57,000.

In response, Christian Aid has released £55,000 to our partner, Zimbabwe Project Trust (ZimPro).

This is assistance made possible because of our supporters’ generous donations.

The extra funds will be used in the worst hit areas of Harare.

Working in the densely populated suburbs of Mbare and Glen Norah, the programme aims to reduce the risk of catching cholera for 15,000 urban poor by promoting public health education, and water and sanitation campaigns.

ZimPro will also distribute items to support their education work, including soap, cotton wool, disinfectants and jerry cans for storing clean water.

Exhausted and frail population

In an increasingly failed state, the lack of health care is devastating an already exhausted and frail population.

Every day around 30 deaths are recorded as being a result of cholera. With proper treatment four fifths of those who contract the disease would survive.

To advise those at risk how they and their families can stay well, ZimPro will conduct essential public health education sessions in communities.

In areas where the lack of water is critical ZimPro will install water supply systems in communal areas such as churches and schools.

Christian Aid’s emergency staff are conducting further assessments to determine what more can be done.
