Platform2 receives Sergeant's salute

Scottish indie rock outfit Sergeant have given a boost to volunteering scheme Platform2 by appearing at a free gig to recruit new volunteers in Aberdeen.

The band, from Glenrothes in Fife, performed an acoustic set at The Tunnels Club on Thursday 22 January.

‘Platform2 gives people an opportunity to do something which they might not have thought was open to them’

Young people at the gig were invited to find out more about the volunteering scheme.

Platform2, funded by the Department for International Development and run by Christian Aid, BUNAC and Islamic Relief, offers young people who would not normally be able to afford the opportunity to volunteer in South Africa, Ghana, Peru or India for 10 weeks.

The project is fully funded so there is no cost to the successful applicant.

‘Platform2 gives people an opportunity to do something which they might not have thought was open to them,’ said singer Nick Mercer.

Underdog

More than 200 young people from Aberdeen have asked for more information since the free gig.

Kerri McGroarty, from Glasgow, spoke at the Tunnels about her recent trip to Ghana.

‘The trip was by far the best experience of my life,’ she said. ‘The amazing people of the villages where I stayed made me smile every day with their kindness and hospitality.

‘I don’t live in the richest of areas, but what I saw on my trip put everything in perspective.’

Nick Mercer said: ‘Platform2 champions the underdog, both in the UK, with the volunteers who sign up, and in the countries where they go to work.’
