Rachel Aitken: work experience

Rachel Aitken, 15, volunteered in Christian Aid's Edinburgh office for her work experience.

I’d always been interested in developing countries and Christian Aid seemed like the perfect place to go to learn more’ she said.

‘When I contacted Christian Aid the staff were really helpful. They arranged everything despite never having done work experience with someone my age.’

Phil Acott from Christian Aid Edinburgh arranged the details with Rachel’s school.

'When Rachel offered to spend this important week of her school year with us in the Edinburgh office, we were very keen to offer her an engaging week.

'Christian Aid is committed to involving volunteers from all sections of the community in its work, including young people.'

'So, we were also keen to lay the foundations for welcoming more high school students on work placement in the future.'

Rachel's role

Rachel spent a week doing a variety of things ranging from writing to MSPs to shadowing people at meetings.

'I did something different everyday and was never bored,' she said. 'I worked with people from all different departments including supporter relations, media and innovations.’

‘This work experience will help me a lot when looking for a job as I have gained a lot of skills and information from working with Christian Aid. Being here has made me want to volunteer with Christian Aid in the future and maybe even do a gap year with Christian Aid.’

Rachel is studying for her standard grades at Earlston High School and currently wants to study law at Aberdeen.

Best bits

‘The staff were really supportive and trusted me with responsible and challenging tasks. They were all really friendly and nice though I wouldn’t say the same for their coffee!’
